The basic mechanics of an electromagnetic electronic whiteboard involve two components: the digitized grid and the digitizing pen. The digitizing pen contains a transponder that emits an electronic signal. When the pen comes in contact with the surface of the digitized grid, the signal makes an electric contact that is communicated to the computer. This signal tells the computer the location of the pen on the surface of the digitized grid in x and y coordinates. The precision of input is controlled by the dispersion or width of the signal emitted from the digitizing pen, and the density of the lines in the underlying digitized grid. Electromagnetic whiteboard allows user a degree of input precision equal to or superior to a mouse.
